Drayage FAQ
Container drayage is short-distance transportation of shipping containers, usually from a port or rail terminal to a nearby warehouse, distribution center, or other transportation facility. It's an important link in the supply chain that allows for quick movement of freight between modes of transportation, i.e., ships, trains, and trucks. Drayage is usually done by specialized trucks and chassis that are specially designed to transport containers.
Drayage rates are calculated based on a number of factors:
- Distance: The farther the cargo needs to be transported from the Port of Miami and Port Everglades, the higher the drayage cost. This is typically calculated as Haul and Fuel cost.
- Wait Time: The wait time at the port terminals, rail terminals, or distribution centers, such as waiting times for loading and unloading, can increase costs. Typically 1 hour of free wait time is included in the rate.
- Live load/unload vs Container Drop: Containers which are required to be dropped for loading/unloading always incur additional charges due to the bobtail there and back, along with the additional number of days that the chassis use is billed for.
- Size & Weight: The cargo size and weight does go into the drayage rate calculation and overweight or out-of-gauge cargo will increase the rate. This can be seen as OOG fees and Permit fees.
- Equipment: The type of chassis required influence overall drayage rates. Regular chassis being the cheapest, with more specialized step-deck chassis increasing the rate.
